You may know a lot of vocabulary…

You may understand Netflix, podcasts, French people in the street…

But if you haven’t understood this specific mechanism, your French will always sound… a little foreign, a little “bloqué”.

Practice this for real

Turn grammar rules into speaking reflexes.

Practice French with guidance so you stop overthinking and start speaking more naturally.

And it’s not your fault: it’s almost never taught properly.

So today, I’m going to explain the hidden secrets of fluency, how to avoid mistakes even advanced learners make… and how to speak with a much more natural accent, without forcing it.

1. The mistakes that give away your pronunciation (even at an advanced level)

Most learners focus on words.

They learn word by word, like separate blocks.

Except that…

👉 French people never speak word by word.

They speak in flow, in enchaînements, in musicality.

And that’s where many learners get “repérer”.

Here’s a very simple example:

je ai faim

✔️ j’ai faim

Or another one:

ce est vrai

✔️ c’est vrai

The difference?

Elision.

Without it, your French sounds mechanical. With it, it becomes natural.

2. ELISION: the art of shortening… to speak better

People often think elision means “removing letters”.

But no.

Elision is about opening a passage, a sound shortcut, that makes your French fluent.

Look:

  • je aij’ai
  • ce estc’est
  • je habitej’habite
  • je aimej’aime
  • si ils’il

I’ll let you hear it now:

Je ai faim ➡️ j’ai faim (natural)

Ce est normal ➡️ c’est normal (French)

Do you hear the difference? It’s instant.

Your accent becomes faster, lighter, more alive.

And above all: this is exactly how French people speak.

3. LIAISONS: the magic chaining of French

Now let’s move on to the other secret: liaison.

Liaison is when a word “prête” its final consonant to the next word:

  • les‿amis
  • vous‿avez
  • mon‿ami
  • un‿enfant
  • les‿hommes

Without liaison:

les amis (separate)

With liaison:

✔️ les‿zamis (natural)

Let me show you:

➡️ vous avez (separate)

➡️ vous‿avez (French)

➡️ les hommes (separate)

➡️ les‿zommes (fluid)

And yes, sometimes the letter changes sound — like the S that becomes Z.

That’s what makes the language come alive.

4. Beyond rules: the musicality of French

Elision and liaisons are not just rules.

They are the foundations of French rhythm and intonation.

French people speak in “blocs sonores”.

➡️ j’ai-envie-de-sortir-ce-soir

➡️ vous-avez-déjà-vu-ce-film

➡️ c’est-pas-la-fin-du-monde

Everything flows.

Everything connects.

Nothing is isolated.

If you want a more native-like accent, this is where everything happens.

5. Your transformation: one simple exercise to do every day

Here’s a very powerful exercise I do with my students:

The daily 3-sentence exercise

Every day, say out loud:

1️⃣ One sentence with elision

2️⃣ One sentence with liaison

3️⃣ One sentence with both

Par exemple :

  • J’ai oublié mes clés. (I forgot my keys.)
  • Vous‿avez raison. (You’re right.)
  • C’est‿une bonne idée. (That’s a good idea.)

Do it in front of your mirror.

Record yourself.

Repeat each sentence 10 times.
