Near Future or Simple Future: Which One Should You Use in French?

🇫🇷 In short : “Je vais partir” and “je partirai” both talk about the future, but they do not create exactly the same impression. Here is how to choose naturally between the near future and the simple future.

This difficulty is very common among French learners because the rule seems simple at first… then exceptions and natural usage appear in conversations.

The main difference

The near future is formed with aller + infinitive: je vais partir. It is very common when speaking, especially for a near, concrete or already planned action.

The simple future is a conjugated form: je partirai. It often sounds more neutral, formal, distant, or connected to predictions and promises.

Form Example Nuance
Near future Je vais appeler Manon. Planned, concrete, near action.
Simple future J’appellerai Manon. More formal, distant or a promise.

 

When to use the near future

Use the near future when the action is close, already decided, or strongly connected to the present.

  • Je vais faire les courses après le travail.
  • On va regarder un film ce soir.
  • Il va pleuvoir, regarde le ciel.

 

When to use the simple future

Use the simple future for predictions, promises, less immediate decisions or a more written style.

  • Un jour, je parlerai français couramment.
  • Je te rappellerai demain.
  • Nous partirons en juillet.

 

The natural nuance

In conversation, French people use the near future a lot. It often sounds more natural, direct and alive.

The simple future is still very useful, but it can feel more formal or more distant.
